Beethoven’s Ninth, within reach

Beethoven’s own finale demands four vocal soloists, doubled woodwinds with piccolo and contrabassoon, four horns, three trombones, a percussion battery and a sustained high A for the sopranos. Almost no choir or orchestra on earth can field that. G major rather than Beethoven’s D major, in a flowing 6/8. Not one note in any of the four voices rises above the staff — the sustained high A that makes the original finale so punishing for sopranos simply never occurs. The two Solo stanzas are sung by four singers from within your own choir, so no guest soloists are needed.
