Coues Deer - The Complete Huntervale Hunting Guide (PDF)

The desert "gray ghost" - a tiny, hyper-wary whitetail you hunt with your eyes before you ever hunt him with your feet.

This is not a hunt where you cover ground and bump into deer. It is a glassing game - arguably the most optics-intensive deer hunt on the continent - built around long, patient hours behind high-power, tripod-mounted binoculars and a spotting scope, picking apart distant Southwestern slopes for one small gray shape. A mature Coues buck might weigh only about a hundred pounds, but in difficulty he is a genuine trophy. Hunters who fall for Coues deer tend to fall hard, drawn by the challenge, the spectacular sky-island country, and the deep satisfaction of outwitting one of the wariest deer alive. This guide walks you through everything: the animal, his country, the gear, the methods, and the honest mistakes that send most hunters home empty-handed.
