🎙️ Voice Artists: Protect Your Voice from Being Stolen by AI!

Over the past five years, AI has gone from niche to normal. Not only that, it's happened with alarming speed. You've all heard AI-generated voices, seen deepfakes, and watched technology blur the lines between the real and the synthetic. But for professional voice artists, this isn’t just impressive—it’s alarming.

Your voice is your product, your identity, your livelihood AND your INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. And yet, it’s now easier than ever for it to be scraped, cloned, and repurposed—often without your knowledge or consent.

🚨 The Real Risk: AI Voice Cloning

AI tools can now convincingly mimic a voice with just a few minutes of audio. For many voice artists, that audio already exists online—in ads, audiobooks, YouTube videos, e-learning courses, and more. Worse still, some clients may use your recordings not just for a project—but to train an AI model to replace you.

Unless your contract explicitly forbids this, you could unknowingly sign away the rights to your own voice.

📜 The Clause Every Voice Artist Must Include

If you’re a voice artist, you need to get specific in your contracts. A general “usage rights” clause is no longer enough. Make it crystal clear that your voice must not be used for training AI models.

Employment contracts can be complicated and contain lots of legalese. But, as the saying goes 'The Devil is in the detail'. Make sure all contracts you enter have been thoroughly checked by your legal representative - check and double check the small print.

To help you avoid getting burnt by contracts you enter into, we have created a downloadable PDF Contract Resource for Voiceover Artists.

You can use this to add a clause in a contract with a potential employer or add it as an addendum to a contract that is already in place.
