Renaissance Fragonard Paintings

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) was a French painter and printmaker who was known for his late Rococo style, which was characterized by remarkable facility, exuberance, and hedonism. He was one of the most prolific artists active in the last decades of the Ancien Régime, producing more than 550 paintings, not counting drawings and etchings. Fragonard was born in Grasse, Alpes-Maritimes, the son of François Fragonard, a glover, and Françoise Petit. He was articled to a Paris notary when his father's circumstances became strained through unsuccessful speculations, but showed such talent and inclination for art that he was taken at the age of eighteen to François Boucher. Boucher recognized the youth's rare gifts but, disinclined to waste his time with one so inexperienced, sent him to Chardin's atelier. 

Fragonard developed an exuberant and fluid manner as a painter, draftsman, and printmaker, embodying the freedom and curiosity of the French Enlightenment. He abandoned early on the conventional career path dictated by the hierarchical structure of the Royal Academy, working largely for private patrons. Fragonard's masterpiece of this period is the series of large panel paintings commissioned by Madame du Barry, the official mistress of Louis XV, for the Château de Louveciennes. The subjects of the paintings can generally be described as lovers in various stages of romantic involvement in lush, overgrown gardens full of mythological statuary, potted plants, and cascading flowers. 

Fragonard's art was too playful and erotic for the neoclassical art movement that followed the Rococo, and his reputation declined in the 19th century. However, his works have since been reevaluated and are now considered to be some of the finest examples of the Rococo style. One of his most famous paintings is The Swing, which was produced in 1767 and is known for its frivolity and eroticism.
