A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Welcome to the second book in The Resistance Chronicles. Confusingly, I also refer to this second book as novella 1.

Technically, this book is over length for a novella, which should be up to 40,000 words. This book is 50,000 words, because I wanted stories 11 and 12 to go deeper than the other stories (1 to 10) which are all around the same length. I also included the introduction from Breaking Out to aid new readers orientation in this universe.

So, too long to be a novella, but not long enough to be a full novel, generally over 80,000 words, Breaking Out is over 120,000 words. If that wasn’t bad enough, this book is a prequel, set in the years 2796 to 2814, before the events in Breaking Out, set in 2815.

It was important that this be the second book and occur in this form. The stories build out some of the other characters that we met in Breaking Out. Characters that may in passing have assumed to be non-core, I am telling you we are in fact likely to see them again in the next novel: Behind The Lines, which I am in the early stages of writing and plan to publish H2 2024.

The stories in this book occur in the same universe and with the same characters. Events in this book do not get referenced in Breaking Out, nor is this book required for Breaking Out to make sense. Consequently, it does not matter if you read this novella before or after Breaking Out.

This book is much more about building the reader's familiarity with the universe and these recurrent characters and some of their back stories before you meet them again in Behind The Lines.

The Resistance Chronicles is the first of six planned series in this universe. Each series will share the same four main novel / three novella structure and interspersed sequence. Some of the series will occur before the events of The Resistance Chronicles and some occur after.

Now you are thinking more about those handy history timeline tables I shared in the Back Matter at the end of Breaking Out non-audio versions.
