What if the first step isn't getting them to finish?

A few months ago, I was supporting a learner who had lost important reading and writing skills after suffering from aphasia. Academic tasks had become difficult, and he was often reluctant to attempt classwork or assignments.

I started using a simple reward system to recognise effort and attempts, not just completed work. Each time he tried, participated, or showed positive behaviour, he earned a star towards a small weekly reward.

The change wasn't immediate, and the reward system was only one part of his support. But gradually, he became more willing to attempt tasks, complained less about writing, and participated more. By the end of the term, his subject teachers were commenting on his significant improvement.

That experience reminded me that sometimes progress begins with simply helping a child believe that trying is worth it.

I created this toolkit to help you do the same at home.

Inside, you'll find:

  • A simple parent's guide to positive reinforcement
  • A goal selection guide with practical behaviour ideas
  • A reusable weekly reward chart
  • A collection of free, low-cost, and bigger reward ideas
  • A thoughtful closing note to encourage you on the journey

Whether you're working on routines, independence, homework, or everyday life skills, this toolkit helps you focus on what matters most—celebrating every small step forward.

Because every star, every effort, and every small success is another step beyond barriers.
