Before you walk into the room
Before You Walk Into the Room
A Practical Accompaniment to the Family Law Process
I escaped an abusive relationship and needed lawyers. I had no idea what to ask, what half of what they said meant, or why I seemed to go from one appointment to another. Each court hearing was overwhelming, largely because I didn't understand what was happening or why. By the time I understood the process, it was over. To say I could have been better prepared is an understatement.
Lawyers understand the legal process. But when you are struggling to stay safe, keep your kids safe, dealing with the emotional reality of leaving and trying to manage everything else at the same time, the explanation of why each step is happening, what you need to prepare for and how you can make better use of your lawyer can easily get lost. Family law can feel like another language at exactly the time you most need to understand what is happening.
Before You Walk Into the Room was created from that experience: not as legal advice, and not as a substitute for your lawyer, but as a practical companion to help you understand the process, prepare for it and make better use of the professional advice you receive.
It covers the things that are often learned only through experience: how to prepare for meetings, organise information and evidence, communicate effectively with your lawyer, understand legal costs, deal with correspondence, prepare for court, and understand what to ask, what to prepare, what to keep and what to expect.
It will not tell you what legal decisions to make. It is there to help you participate more effectively in your own case and understand what is happening around you.
Whether you are at the very beginning of the process or already working with a solicitor, Before You Walk Into the Room is designed to help you walk into the room better informed and better prepared.
