Papa Legba Blues (Atchafalaya Version)

PAPA LEGBA BLUES (ATCHAFALAYA VERSION)

Track 7 from Smokin’ Joe Cotton, The Blues'll Never Be The Same.

“I did go to the crossroads. I found the man. The blues are in my soul, and those demons are my band.”

Decades have passed, and Joe Cotton is an old man.

But some doors, once opened, never quite close.

In this final version of Papa Legba Blues, Joe once again encounters the mysterious gatekeeper who has remained at the edges of his story since their meeting at the Clarksdale Crossroads many years before.

This time, Joe brings his blues harp.

What follows is part blues performance, part vision and part something altogether harder to explain, as Joe finds himself playing alongside a most unusual band and guests assembled from the shadows of his journey.

Memory, belief and imagination begin to collide.

Is this a memory?

A dream?

A final journey?

Or has Papa Legba opened the gate one more time?

Smokin’ Joe Cotton ends without answering the question.

Perhaps Joe finally knows.

Smokin’ Joe Cotton is a work of historical musical fiction. Its characters and narrative are fictional, set against real periods of migration, segregation and cultural change. The album draws inspiration from African American blues and gospel traditions and encounters spiritual beliefs and traditions beyond Joe’s own musical journey. The Rock and Roll Rewind Project does not attempt to speak for those lived experiences. Through original music and storytelling, the project seeks to acknowledge, celebrate and explore the people, creativity and cultural influences behind the music.
