Ibn al-Qayyim wrote that when Allah caused Adam to descend from Paradise, He did so for wise reasons the intellects cannot comprehend and the tongues cannot describe. The descent was itself the perfection of his condition, so that he could return in the best of states.

This book is about that return. It begins before the beginning, with the Throne above the waters and the creation of the heavens and the earth, and follows the account through to the covenant Allah took from every human soul, the fall, and the enmity that has run between the sons of Adam and Iblīs ever since.

Its central concern is the one most likely to be passed over: how we return to our original homeland by fulfilling the covenant of Tawḥīd, which is the purpose for which we exist. That covenant is inscribed in every created thing, embedded in the fiṭrah, attested to by every soul in the first moments of our species' existence, and preserved in the Qurʾān and Sunnah.
