πŸ—ΊοΈ Curriculum Breakdown

This collection focuses deeply on mastering Large Numbers, Factors and Multiples through a carefully curated system:

How a large number is written (4 Sub-levels): Four rungs on one number: what each digit is worth, where the commas fall, and what the whole thing is called out loud. Every place is ten of the place on its right, all the way up, and a long number is read a group of three at a time rather than digit by digit - that is the idea the run is built on.

Comparing, rounding and estimating (3 Sub-levels): Once a number can be read it can be judged. Comparing is exact, rounding throws information away on purpose, and estimating is rounding used before a sum rather than after it.

Roman numerals (1 Sub-level): The one system on the ladder with no place value at all, which is what makes it worth meeting: a child who has only ever seen our figures does not know that the position of a digit is a choice somebody made.

Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 (2 Sub-levels): The rung the second half of the level rests on. Nothing is calculated: the digits move, and the zeros are the evidence. Cancelling zeros in rung 22 is this rule read backwards.

What a number is made of (3 Sub-levels): Multiples, factors, and the numbers that have no factors but themselves. Three rungs that are one question asked from both ends - 24 is a multiple of 6 and 6 is a factor of 24 are the same sentence.

The factor tree (1 Sub-level): The level's first new notation, and the only place the splitting is written down rather than done in the head. A tree records the one decision the method is made of: split this number in two, and split those again if they will go.

The divisibility rules (3 Sub-levels): Three rungs, in the order the rules get harder to check: the last digit, then the digit sum, then the ones built out of both. They are here because cancelling by three is a guess until a child can look at 306 and know three goes into it.

The highest common factor and the lowest common multiple (3 Sub-levels): The two questions two numbers can be asked together, and then the word problems, where the whole difficulty is deciding which of the two a sentence is asking for.

Cancelling: the stroke (5 Sub-levels): The level's second notation and its destination. A division is written as a fraction, the zeros come off in pairs, a common factor comes off next, and only then is anything divided. Every rung above this one exists to make this one possible.

πŸ“– How To Use This Workbook

Print the workbook, read each rung's method page, and let your child work inside the printed frame. Then check the answers your way: in the printable answer-key PDF included in this download, or online, one page at a time, with the order ID on your Payhip receipt (valid for six months). Please keep the answer key for the adult marking the work and do not share it with your child: the workbook only works if they have worked each answer out for themselves.
