“20 to Life” is a story about desperation, poverty, and one terrible decision that changes a young man’s life forever.

Set against the hard years of the Great Depression, the song tells the story of a young man watching his family struggle just to survive. With an empty cupboard, hungry children, and nowhere to turn, desperation pushes him into a decision he can never take back.

Years later, he sits behind cold prison walls serving twenty years to life, looking back on the hunger, the judge, his family, and the choice that cost him his freedom.

But beneath the story is a bigger message: no child should ever have to choose between a prison cell and a loaf of bread. Sometimes circumstances can shape a person's choices, but we still have to live with the consequences of those choices.

“20 to Life” is a song about poverty, regret, family, consequences, and wishing you could go back and take another road.
