Simple Harmonic Motion is the term used in physics to describe the motion of, among other things, a swinging pendulum.
There are many times when I think that knitting in general could be described with the words Simple Harmonic Motion!! However the creation of a shawl using short rows symmetrical about the centre has always especially reminded me of this term. (Due to the short rows the shape of the shawlette is somewhere between a crescent and an half-circle!)
The border of the shawl is knit first and then the main body of the shawl is knit at right angles to this.
I use so-called German Short Rows in this pattern and give a detailed description on how to work them in the pattern. This is an excellent pattern for anyone who is looking for an introduction to German Short Rows.
Yarn: You will need ca. 600m of fingering yarn (100g/420m). The shawl can however be knitted in any yarn weight, even combining two contrasting colours of yarn by working alternating sections in different colours.
Needles & Notions: 4mm - 4.5mm /US6 -US7, 2 stitch markers
Gauge and Size: 10cm X 10cm = 32rows X 16sts, shawl size: 140cm X 50cm
Pattern: The lace border is charted. The main body of the shawl has written instructions, with a detailed description on how to work German Short Rows (also suitable for novices).
The Pattern is written for 5 repeats. Depending on how much yarn you have, you can stop at four repeats or continue with six or more. There are instructions given at the end of the pattern on how to increase the shawl size.
The Downloaded pattern consists of 5 A4 pages with photos, one chart and detailed instructions.
The Pattern is available in English and German.
