Juneteenth: Freedom Delayed, Freedom Celebrated

Juneteenth is one of the most important commemorations in American history. It marks June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved African Americans were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two years earlier, freedom had not reached many enslaved people in Texas until that day.
