How to start the business side
- Choose a simple business name: make sure the name is available before putting it on flyers, booking pages, or social media.
- Get an EIN: apply through the official IRS EIN page if you need a business tax ID for banking, hiring, or vendor forms.
- Check your state and city rules: look up your local business registration, sales tax, home-based business, health, zoning, or professional license requirements.
- Open a business bank account: keep business money separate from personal money so income, expenses, deposits, refunds, and taxes are easier to track.
- Set up payments and records: choose a payment processor, keep receipts, track income and expenses, and save customer/job notes in one place.
- Set up booking or intake: use a simple form, calendar, DM script, or quote process so every lead has a clear next step.
- Protect the business: consider insurance, written policies, refund/deposit terms, client consent forms, and professional guidance where needed.
- Build proof early: collect photos, reviews, testimonials, before/after examples, and repeat-customer follow-up from the beginning.
Extra setup notes for coaching kits
- Check league and field rules: confirm league registration, field/court permits, practice locations, equipment rules, parent communication rules, and safety requirements.
- Use safety paperwork: collect emergency contacts, waivers, medical notes, attendance, and parent permissions when appropriate.
- Keep team money clear: track dues, uniforms, tournament fees, sponsorship money, and team expenses separately from personal spending.
Important: This is a startup organization checklist, not legal, tax, insurance, licensing, banking, or professional advice. Always verify requirements with the IRS, your state, your city, your bank, your licensing board, and a qualified professional when needed.
