What is it?

The Cinematic Time Machine: A Feminist Film Club is an online movie club celebrating the movies of yesteryear, but specifically those written, directed, produced by and starring women. We watch a diverse range of classic films and discuss women’s contributions from a feminist perspective.

How it works

🍿 Once you join the club, one of the first things you’ll be asked to do is join the Facebook community, so you can dive in to the chat and access all of the previous months movies and recipes.

🍿 Every quarter we pick a genre to enjoy. We’re currently watching Suspense.

🍿 And then each month you will receive a movie choice within that genre carefully selected to highlight one of the amazing women who created or starred in it. The pick will come in a pdf format with links to rent/buy online.

🍿 Two live watch-parties for the selection on the penultimate weekend of the month.

🍿 A Mid Month Mini which is an extra, movie recommendation, just for fun, in the middle of the month. This time it’s a female focused silent short film.

🍿 Plus you’ll receive recipes for a snack and a drink (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to match the movie..

🍿 The movie selection and accompanying pdf factsheet and recipe cards will be posted in the community each month as well as emailed to you, so it’s introvert friendly too.

🍿 Membership Card, and stickers, in the post.

What we’re watching:

FILMS ON FAME & AMBITION

March: All About Eve (1950) marks the start of a new season, and the stage star Margo (Bette Davis) hires an aspiring actress, Eve as her PA but Eve has ambitions of her own.

April: Stage Door (1937) a group of young women share ambition, a love of the stage and a boarding house, with a young Lucille Ball before she because famous.

May: A Star is Born (1954) a young actress (Judy Garland) is helped by an older, drunken actor but as her star rises, his falls.

RESISTANCE SEASON

June: The Great Dictator (1940) Charlie Chaplin parodies Hitler and fascism a film with one of the greatest speeches ever said!

July: To Be or Not To Be (1942) A political satire, this one brings the light relief when an acting troupe gets caught up in a Polish soldiers quest to find a German Spy.

August: Casablanca (1942) Humphrey Bogart's former lover arrives at his bar and he must decide whether to help her and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis.

Why is it feminist?

Because I am. I can’t separate my belief in equality from the way I view movies so I figured if I want to watch old films from a more modern perspective there must the others who do too. So why not unite and enjoy it together!
