In this Ceramic Pencil Holder Art Lesson, students learn to make a ceramic pencil holder using slab building techniques. They combine slab building and decorative methods, using a variety of processes, materials, tools and techniques to create the piece.

The lesson comes with a visual and text step-by-step (each step on its own page with a description), a lesson plan, a finished example, a rubric and a step-by-step handout. The lesson demonstrates building only. Finishing ceramic art is a separate process, so you choose whether to glaze, underglaze or paint based on the resources and budget in your classroom.

HOW TO USE IT

Look over the lesson plan and gather the materials in advance, then read through the visual and text step-by-steps. You may want to make a sample yourself so you are ready to help students. Photocopy the handouts you need, such as the step-by-steps and rubric, and print the example in color to show before the lesson as your hook.

Project the step-by-step pages for students to follow, show them under a document camera (best printed in color), or use them as your own guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a picture and a text description.

Materials: 30 step-by-step handouts, your choice of clay (typically firing clay), wood tools, paper towel, a scoring tool such as a plastic fork, and rubber ribs, metal tools or stamps.
