SURFER BEAUTY ART PRINT

About Korean Minhwa

Minhwa is a traditional Korean folk painting style known for its vibrant colors, symbolic imagery, and imaginative compositions.

Rather than simply depicting beautiful objects, traditional Minhwa often expressed people's wishes for happiness, prosperity, longevity, love, and good fortune.

SURFER BEAUTY SERIES

Yurangmyo’s “Surfer Beauty” series reinterprets traditional Korean beauty paintings and Minhwa (folk painting) through the contemporary image of a surfer woman.

Traditional Korean beauty and symbolism are combined with the sea, surfing, and a sense of freedom, creating a contemporary interpretation of Korean visual culture.

SURFER BEAUTY – PEONY

This artwork brings together an elegant surfer woman and a richly blooming peony.

In traditional Korean art, the peony symbolizes wealth, prosperity, happiness, beauty, and abundance. Its magnificent beauty is combined with the free and dynamic spirit of surfing.

SURFER BEAUTY – DANCHONG

This artwork combines a surfer woman with the vibrant colors and patterns of Dancheong, the traditional decorative painting found on Korean palaces, temples, and wooden architecture.

Dancheong represents harmony, beauty, protection, and dignity. Its vivid colors and traditional patterns are reinterpreted through a contemporary surfing aesthetic.

SURFER BEAUTY – LOTUS & HWAROT EMBROIDERY

Inspired by the traditional embroidery of the Hwarot, a ceremonial wedding robe worn by women during the Joseon Dynasty, this artwork brings historical Korean motifs into a contemporary setting.

The lotus, butterflies, and phoenix motifs traditionally symbolize purity, beauty, love, happiness, good fortune, and peace. These symbols of celebration and blessing are combined with the contemporary image of a surfer woman.

SURFER BEAUTY – ILWOL-OBONGDO

This artwork reinterprets Ilwol-Obongdo, a traditional Korean royal screen traditionally placed behind the king’s throne, through the contemporary figure of a surfer woman.

The sun, moon, five peaks, waterfall, pine trees, and waves represent harmony, balance, stability, and prosperity. Traditional royal imagery is brought together with the free spirit of surfing in a contemporary interpretation of Korean art.
