The Karl Collar is a fantastic way to pep up a boring old coat. Before you start mulling over websites to decide on your next grey/navy/black coat, just add that burst of colour you want using the Karl collar.

Get yourself several skeins of chunky yarn and make a few of these fun technicolored collar scarves for the gals in your life.

I have to warn you, this gets addictive! All the colour combinations possible will get you making this again and again.

⚠️ WARNING: This is not a traditional pattern. There is no gauge. There is no yarn weight requirement. Bring your scraps and your sense of adventure.

What you need:

The yarn you choose determines the hook you need. Generally, it’s quite safe to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, BUT because this is going to be worn around your neck or on top of your coat, your comfort with wool will determine how stiff this scarf/collar should be. If you use a smaller hook, the collar will be stiff but have a definite sturdy shape. If you use a larger hook, the Karl Collar will be softer and have more drape, but also have larger gaps between the stitches.

I used Per Lei from Lana Grossa. 100% wool, 50g/60m, with a recommended hook/needle size of 9-10mm. It’s a classic single-twist chunky yarn. The collar weighs 153g; that is 3 skeins of the main colour, 2 skeins for the spokes, 1 skein for the background colour to the spokes, and 1 skein for the bobbles.

Alternatively, you can use yarn scraps, combining about 3 aran weight yarns to work up the neck portion, and then

using fresh new yarn to work the forked spokes and the bobbles.
