The Terraced Gold

Vietnam is a country you experience at street level — not from behind a window, but from a plastic stool, the back of a boat, a motorbike on a mountain pass, a market at dawn, a bowl of soup that tastes like a lifetime of thinking about broth. This journey runs the length of the country: the street life of Hanoi, the karst towers of Hạ Long Bay, imperial Huế, the lantern-lit trading port of Hội An, the river world of the Mekong Delta, and the restless modern energy of Ho Chi Minh City. Along the way it crosses the Hai Vân Pass from one Vietnam into another — watching a civilization change with the landscape, and refuse, everywhere, to stop moving forward.
