Encode and Decode Socks

The design of the Enigma Machine was ingenious. Based on a substitution cypher, it used rotating disks, a system of “plugboards”, and daily changing keys to keep—or attempt to keep—German secrets safe during both 20th century World Wars.

The cracking of the Enigma code was one of the most significant successes of the British codebreaking group known as Bletchley Park. There are two sides to every secure message—and decoding is just as critical to spycraft as encoding.

Encode is a toe-up sock with a fancy lace motif that reminds me of the Enigma disks. It has a gusseted, flap heel worked from the bottom up. Decode is a cuff-down sock with the same fancy lace pattern. It has a gusseted, flap heel and standard toe.

Work one of each to make a pair, and feel extra crafty!
