AS ABOVE SO BELOW by Hermes Trismegistus
As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul.
- Hermes Trismegistus
The phrase has its origins in Hermeticism, a philosophical and esoteric tradition based on the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus, that emerged in ancient Egypt and Greece and was later developed in the Middle Ages. It is also one of the very basic laws of Wicca.
Hermes Trismegistus is a legendary figure in the Western esoteric tradition. The name "Hermes Trismegistus" means "Hermes the thrice-great," and it reflects the belief that Hermes was a combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.
His teachings were believed to have been passed down through a series of texts known as the Hermetica, which were widely circulated in the ancient world.
The Hermetica had a significant influence on the development of Western esotericism and provided a foundation for the emergence of various spiritual and philosophical movements, including Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, and Renaissance humanism. Although the historical existence of Hermes Trismegistus is uncertain, his teachings have had a profound impact on Western culture and continue to inspire spiritual seekers and scholars to this day.
