The Quiet Photograph
What made you stop?
That simple question is at the heart of The Quiet Photograph.
Finding something worth photographing and making a photograph of it are not necessarily the same thing. This book looks at what happens between those two moments: recognizing what caught your attention, understanding what within the scene actually matters, and finding a way to make that clearer in the photograph.
The Quiet Photograph is not a book of compositional rules or formulas for making minimalist photographs. Instead, I use my own photographs, working examples and simple diagrams to explore the decisions that happen before, during and after the shutter is pressed.
Across eight chapters, the book looks at seeing and simplification, finding structure, empty space, the edges of the frame, light and tonal separation, quiet processing, and ultimately how to recognize the visual language developing within your own work.
Throughout the book, I return to the same question: What made me stop? Because understanding that may be more useful than knowing where someone else thinks you should place the horizon.
