Creative Chord Tones For Soloing
Most guitarists take a scale-based view on soloing and improvising. Many are still unsatisfied with what they hear in the end. Although scales are important and play a huge role in the melodic material used in soloing, it's not the full picture!
If you are playing over chords (either a single chord or a progression), it is the notes of the chord at that moment that is the key to unlocking the sounds you desire to hear!
In this 47 min video with accompanying backing track and tab (PDF and GP), we take a look at a sample solo which utilizes "chord tone targeting" in every phrase. It will also highlight this approach using various techniques like alternate picking, legato, tapping, sweeping, slides and more. Dig in and enjoy!
