Course Summary

This course builds upon a foundational understanding of childlessness and offer concrete strategies and considerations for affirming childless lived experiences throughout every stage of therapy, from first contact to assessment, intervention, and termination. Participants will walk away with information that is grounded in research, clinical wisdom, and lived experience. The training is also designed to be an answer to the some of the difficulties about therapy that the childless community have expressed through various mediums including published literature. It is appropriate for new, intermediate, and seasoned clinicians.


1.5 CE offered. Katie Maynard PLLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7374. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Katie Maynard PLLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.


COURSE PARTICIPANTS WILL:


  1. Learn about the phases of adjustment to childlessness and the concept of non-event loss
  2. Build awareness of how to integrate insights about childlessness through all stages of therapy
  3. Expand assessment procedures and questions to be inclusive of considerations for childless clients
  4. Learn and practice three interventions to use in sessions with childless clients
  5. Revisit and adapt the interventions into termination/closure activities
  6. Leave with a workbook, references cited, and discussion guide

Katie Maynard, MSW, LICSW

Katie Maynard is a licensed Clinical Social Worker with over two decades of involvement within psychotherapy, clinical research, and macro-level community based social work. She holds master's degrees in both Social Work and Library and Information Sciences from the University of Washington.


Her lived experience informs and inspires her enthusiastic advocacy for better mental health care for people without children. Alongside a private practice she also provides supervision, consultation, and training to clinicians seeking to enlarge their competency with therapy that is affirmative of childless and childfree people.
