Past the Post - The Goodwood Cup

One die. Eight horses. Two miles of Goodwood turf to settle.

Scandinavia goes off odds-on. Trawlerman is eight years old, has won four of his last five, and is not going away. Somewhere behind them Miss Alpilles is a 100/1 shot carrying three pounds less than everything else, and she is exactly the one somebody draws out of the hat and wins the sweepstake with.

Past the Post turns the 2026 Goodwood Cup into a few minutes of racing drama, and this pack gives you two ways to run it.

The field

All eight declared runners, rated off the official figures and the declared market: Scandinavia, Trawlerman, Rahiebb, Amiloc, Lazy Griff, French Master, Illinois and Miss Alpilles. Official ratings, Topspeed, Racing Post Ratings, jockeys, trainers and the declared show are all on the Field card.

Every horse is rated across three phases. Gate is early speed from the stalls. Stay is stamina through the long middle of the trip. Kick is the finishing burst.

Why this card is not the Ascot one

Two miles round Goodwood is not the Ascot Gold Cup. This is a sharp, right-handed track with pronounced downhill gradients, running through a bottom turn where the ground falls away and then into a very sharp bend for home. There is a five-furlong run to the line from there, which sounds like plenty of time. The catch is arriving in a position to use it. Held-up horses meet trouble in the straight here often enough that Goodwood's stewards are among the busiest in Britain.

So this card weights the early phases far more heavily than the Ascot sheet did.

You have to be handy here. A closer needs the dice to fall right.
