OWL Collect and Compare
Suggested structure for Outdoor Wildlife Learning (OWL) time:
1) Set the intentions for the OWL time by going over the activity. Set boundaries for spatial awareness and any safety hazards. Some explorers might need help recording the date, time, location and weather. (5 minutes)
2) Give time for explorers to complete the activity. Try not to intervene too much, but guide attention to the activity at hand and to safety. (10-20 minutes)
3) Wrap up with discussion questions giving explorers time to share what they have observed. (5 minutes)
Things to consider:
🌱Be prepared for any weather, but don’t let it keep you indoors!
🌱Choose an area with few hazards. Set boundaries so that your explorers can safely explore without too much intervention.
🌱Some activities use natural materials. Help explorers find materials that are safe to handle, being sure not to destroy or damage nature.
🌱Plan for 20 minutes each day. If an activity is finished early, use the rest of the time for reflection, discussion, or free play.
