Jan Cardigan crochet pattern
⚠️ WARNING: This is not a traditional pattern. There is no gauge. There is no yarn weight requirement. Bring your scraps and your sense of adventure.
The Jan Cardigan has a wide boxy fit. Its length is completely up to your preferences. You can make it cropped, with three-quarter sleeves. Or make it longer with proper long sleeves. How about a fun summer jacket version with cropped puffy sleeves that end above the elbow?
The Jan Cardigan can be done with one yarn, of you can also use it as a scrap-busting project. Either way, be sure to use chunky yarn for maximal cocoon effect. No chunky yarn, and not a fan of the piling they are prone to? The Jan Cardigan can also be made using multiple strands of yarn. Just be sure to keep about the same thickness; 2 strands of medium weight yarn should be continued with 3 strands of worsted weight yarns.
The Jan Cardigan is is a great opportunity to use up (maybe even finally buy?) those funny frizzy furry yarns. You can work in stripes and make both front panels similar, or completely random and assymetrical. Both work.
What you need:
This cardigan is designed to help you use up your yarn scraps.
Who is the crochet pattern for:
This crochet pattern is suitable for ambitious advanced beginners and intermediate crocheters who have a little experience making garments. We start the cardigan by constructing the yoke, which is worked in rows with a raglan construction. The yoke is then separated for a bodice and sleeves: the bodice is then worked in rows, and the sleeves subsequently in rounds.
Or this is for the crocheter who knows what she likes and prefers. So much can be personalised/customised with the Jan Cardigan, and this crochet pattern -- let's maybe just call it a blueprint -- shows you how to make it cropped, or make it longer. Make it looser and slouchier if you prefer an oversized silhouette. Don’t like the three-quarter sleeves? Make them regular length. The three-quarter sleeves are finished with a fitted cuff, but this blueprint also shows you how to make the cardigan with wide sleeves.
This pattern is adjustable sizing, so please read once first, and then depending on your yarn thickness and hook size, choose an odd row to begin with.
What you need:
This cardigan is designed to help you use up your yarn scraps. Collect all the yarn scraps that have shimmer glitter fuzz
and frizz. No yarn scraps? Then go yarn shopping, but treat yarn like paint. Buy all the colours that work together, and
go across textures and thicknesses!
If you are using scrap yarn, then aim to assemble about 400g for XS, and 700g for XL. Here's an estimate of the minimum amount of yarn you need for these sizes:
XS/ US 0-2/ EUR30-32: 450g
S/ US 4-6/ EUR34-36: 500g
M/ US 8-10/ EUR 38-40: 550g
L/ US 12-14/ EUR 42-44: 600g
XL/ US 16-18/ EUR 44-46: 650g
What this crochet pattern contains:
As a scrap yarn project, the pattern contains Madscrapper tips on how to mix yarns. This pattern uses US American crochet terminology. The pdf is 34 pages because it is formatted to be legible on your mobile phones without zooming in and panning. It is also available in an ebook (.epub) format.
