Heidenröslein: The Little Rose on the Heath

Two young German men are thrown into the cauldron of the Western Front.

Both come from very different walks of German life.

Peter von Schiller is a young aristocrat from an old-money family, a Leutnant in the German Army. Günther Klein is a working-class Jew, a young man fighting for a country he considers his own.

Both follow separate paths into a new form of warfare designed to break the bloody stalemate of the trenches: the Sturmtruppen, Germany's elite assault troops, also known as Stoßtruppen or shock troops.

Their work is dangerous, brutal and unforgiving. Every attack could be their last.

But the dangers they face on the battlefield are nothing compared with those awaiting them when the guns finally fall silent.

They return to a defeated Germany, politically shattered, economically devastated and increasingly consumed by bitterness, hatred and blame.

The war may be over, but for Peter and Günther, the struggle for survival is far from finished.

Heidenröslein: The Little Rose on the Heath is a story of courage, comradeship, loyalty and the terrible consequences of war.

Sometimes the cost of peace is more dangerous than the price of war.
