Self-Assessment Writing Tips
This simple, one-pager gives you 4 tips to improve the effectiveness of your performance self-assessment and get the recognition you deserve. And, while these tips are valid whether you are a man or woman, I especially want the ladies out there to pay attention to these words of wisdom.
Writing my performance self-assessments has always been a challenge for me. Maybe you can identify with this, too. As women, we often downplay our achievements. It feels uncomfortable to sing our own praises, and we worry about coming across as boastful. Yet, if we don’t advocate for ourselves, who will?
Consider this: Is your boss fully aware of the value you’ve consistently delivered? While they assess the return on investment (ROI) tied to your salary, they may not inherently grasp the myriad ways you contribute to the business. This tendency—to minimize our impact—can have lasting consequences. It’s one reason why women often receive average or even below-average performance reviews when they've met or exceeded their boss' expectations. This is one reason why the gender pay gap persists over time. Shockingly, only 88 women are promoted to their first managerial position for every 100 men.
So, how can we change this narrative? The answer lies in shifting our focus from effort to impact.
Remember, self-assessments aren’t just about documenting tasks; they’re about showcasing your value. So, when you sit down to write yours, think impact. Your career trajectory—and the closing of that gender pay gap—may depend on it.
