When César Renard settles into his newly inherited country estate just south of Ottawa, he expects quiet mornings, long walks, and the slow rhythm of retirement. Instead, a seemingly straightforward homicide lands on his doorstep. Paul Menzac, a local mechanic, has been charged with killing a drug dealer behind a rural service station, and the Crown is ready to proceed. But Renard’s instincts tell him the case is too tidy, too polite, and too willing to agree with itself.

Paul’s cousin Kayle arrives at the estate desperate and trembling, insisting Paul is innocent. As Renard investigates, he uncovers drag marks, mismatched footprints, and a timeline that refuses to hold together. Kayle’s grief over his daughter’s drug‑related death casts a long shadow, and anonymous tips begin steering the police toward a rival dealer. Renard soon realizes the tips are crafted, not discovered, and that Kayle is quietly shaping the investigation to protect Paul.

Through careful reconstruction and quiet deduction, Renard proves Paul could not have committed the murder. Though he cannot directly prove Kayle’s involvement, he exposes enough truth to force the Crown to withdraw the case. In doing so, Renard inadvertently opens the door to a larger drug‑ring investigation, leaving the police scrambling and the night whispering its next mystery.
