The Living Maths Year | Family-Style Maths Curriculum F–6
Maths that begins in real life.
The Living Maths Year contains 27 rich, hands-on investigations designed to help children discover that mathematics isn’t something that only happens on a workbook page.
Your family might measure a garden bed and work out how many plants will fit. Scale a favourite recipe. Design a tiny home. Estimate the height of a tree. Map your local area. Plan a real journey using timetables. Take $30 to the market and work out whether you can buy lunch. Compare supermarket prices to discover which really is better value. Track a month of temperatures on a Weather Willow. Conduct a soil safari and turn your discoveries into data. Investigate shadows, capacity, probability, patterns, saving money and more.
And you don’t need to teach three separate maths lessons.
Each investigation begins with a shared family experience, then branches into three developmental pathways:
🌱 Explore — broadly Foundation–Year 2
🌿 Investigate — broadly Years 3–4
🌳 Extend — broadly Years 5–6
A younger child might count, build, draw or measure while an older child works with fractions, scale, averages, percentages, proportional reasoning or mathematical modelling, all through the same shared investigation.
And if maths isn’t your strongest subject, that’s okay. Parent guidance is built into the lessons with explanations of what you’re teaching, what you can say, what to watch for and what not to teach yet.
The Living Maths Year includes:
- 27 family-style mathematical investigations
- three developmental pathways spanning Foundation–Year 6
- real-life number, measurement, geometry, statistics, probability and mathematical modelling
- parent teaching support and worked examples
- skip-counting games and practical maths ideas
- the Weather Willow month-long data investigation
- a year-long Tree Anchor investigation that lets children see how both they and their mathematics have grown
- simple DO · RECORD · EXPLAIN assessment
- guidance for keeping a Living Maths Notebook
- Australian Curriculum Version 9 alignment guidance
- a clean, printer-friendly 70-page PDF
What you’ll need alongside it
The Living Maths Year is designed to provide the living and applied part of your child’s mathematics education. I recommend pairing it with around 10–15 minutes of systematic arithmetic practice most days for number facts and computational fluency.
Arithmetic practice builds fluency. The Living Maths Year gives mathematics somewhere to live.
