Everett de Schael has been promoted.

Unfortunately, the promotion involves sneaking up on strangers and smacking them in the forehead on behalf of Magic.

While Magic enjoys an extended personal vacation, Everett has been appointed her temporary stand-in, responsible for delivering new spell Inspirations to unsuspecting magickers across the world. The work is dangerous, exhausting, humiliating, and occasionally hazardous to nearby furniture.

Luckily, Everett has help from his young daughter Rose, who keeps the records, tracks the deadlines, and remains disturbingly calm when everything goes wrong.

Then Everett meets Mabel Rosewater.

Mabel is supposed to receive a new spell, one that she is sure will be as useless as her first. Mabel does not want another useless spell. What Mabel wants is a man. More precisely, she wants her One True Love, as promised by the sacred agrarian wisdom of Mother Sow.

Everett, being a sensible husband, father, Grand Master Wizard, and unwilling public servant of cosmic nonsense, immediately recognizes that this is not his problem.

Naturally, it becomes his problem.

Soon Everett, Rose, Mabel, and an increasingly inconvenient collection of new companions are chasing love, delivering spells, dodging practical engineers, following suspicious clues, managing a probably-cat with violent opinions, and trying to keep up with a magical workload that seems to be getting stranger by the day.

Somewhere behind the chaos, Evil is stirring.

And this time, Evil may have a plan.
