Gustave Courbet, a nineteenth-century French painter, became famous for his overly realistic depiction of nudity. His canvases confused the audience with frankness. The writer Alexandre Dumas (son), once seeing the painting "Sleepers", called Courbet "a womb pretending to be a man and an artist." To this day, the work "The Origin of the World" is considered one of the most scandalous and discussed.
