This St Patrick's Day Bird with Shamrock Art Lesson is a cheerful March art project. Students follow a step-by-step directed drawing to create a playful bird character with a lucky shamrock, then paint it with watercolor to add soft blended backgrounds and bright spring colors.

It is made for elementary art classrooms, classroom teachers celebrating St Patrick's Day, homeschool families and substitute teacher plans. The structured drawing helps students feel confident, and because they choose their own colors and painting style, every finished bird looks different.

WHAT'S INCLUDED (NON-EDITABLE)

  • Full St Patrick's Day bird art lesson plan
  • Step-by-step directed drawing visual guide for students
  • Teacher instructions for teaching the lesson
  • Student drawing worksheet pages
  • Example artwork to show students the final project
  • Art rubric for assessing student work
  • Optional coloring page extension

HOW TO USE IT

Students start with the directed drawing, which breaks the bird down into simple shapes so they can build the body, wings, face and feet. Next they draw a large shamrock beside the bird, trace their lines with black marker, and paint the bird, shamrock and background with watercolor, exploring blending and expressive color.

Materials: pencils and erasers, black fine liner or felt markers, watercolor paints, a paintbrush and water, and cardstock or watercolor paper. You can adapt the materials to what you have on hand. Along the way, students practice guided drawing, explore line and shape, and build confidence drawing animals and characters.
