Three Historic Braids: Fingerloop Kit instructions

(or maybe four!)

  • A Broad Lace of Five Bows
  • A Round Lace of Five Bows
  • A Lace Bend Round of Eight Bows
  • A Grene Dorge of Six Bows

A 20 page colour booklet. It includes an historical summary and clear visual instructions on how to make three (no, four!) historic fingerloop braids based on two wonderful 15th century sources; Harley 2320 from the British Library and the Tollemache book in the private collection of Helmingham Hall, Suffolk, using lots of silly photos of my hands! It comes in response to a request for downloadable instructions to go with the videos on my Youtube channel particularly for overseas makers.

These ‘instructions only’ normally accompany a full kit, for which I can investigate overseas postage, on request.

Materials needed:

You will need thread and set up a fixed point of tension such as a carpenter’s clamp. A doorknob, or even your big toe will work equally well! Appropriate thread is silk, cotton or linen. Avoid wool to begin with as it is stretchy and can stick to itself. Learn the technique first, understand the tension, and then try wool.
