The Insiders Guide To Aging Well
The healthcare system is complicated by design.
This guide changes that.
The families who navigate aging and healthcare with the most grace and the least regret are not the ones with the most money or the best connections.
They are the ones who knew what questions to ask.
The Insider's Guide to Aging Well is the comprehensive, clinically grounded, plain-language guide that every family navigating aging wishes someone had handed them before they needed it - written by licensed Occupational Therapist with over two decades of experience inside every level of the healthcare system.
Six chapters. Everything the system won't tell you.
All of it in language you can actually understand and use.
What's inside:
- Chapter 1 - Your Body, Your Roadmap
The health conditions most commonly affecting aging adults - cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic, cancer, kidney, bone and joint, sensory, and mental health - explained clearly with what to watch for and when to act. Including the "know your numbers" lab guide families should bring to annual visits.
- Chapter 2 - Know Before You Go
Every level of care explained - from home health to skilled nursing, palliative versus hospice, PACE to continuing care communities. Including the admitted vs observation distinction that saves families thousands, and how to choose a rehab facility before you need one.
- Chapter 3 - The Dream Team You Didn't Know You Had
What physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists actually do- and how to use them strategically to prevent falls, restore function, and maintain independence at every stage.
- Chapter 4 - The Medication Merry-Go-Round
Polypharmacy, the medications that carry specific risks for older adults, dietary interactions that may go unexplained, and practical tools for managing complex regimens safely. The clinical knowledge many families never receive.
- Chapter 5 - Decoding the Insurance Maze
Medicare Parts A,B,C, and D explained in plain language. Original Medicare vs Medicare Advantage - the real tradeoffs. Medigap enrollment windows. Medicaid planning. Long-term care insurance. Veterans benefits including aid and assistance. Your SHIP counselor and why to use them.
- Chapter 6 - Get Your Papers In Order
Every legal document every family needs - Power of Attorney, Healthcare Proxy, Living Wil, POLST, DNR, HIPAA, and wills- explained clearly and compassionately. Including the critical revocable vs irrevocable trust distinction that most families learn too late.
