Effective clinical supervision requires more than clinical expertise. Supervisors must balance the responsibilities of supporting professional development, evaluating competence, maintaining a strong supervisory alliance, and protecting client welfare. This advanced course examines contemporary, evidence-informed approaches to clinical supervision across stages of professional development.

Participants will explore normative and criterion-based approaches to evaluating competence, developmental considerations for supervising early-, mid-, and senior-career clinicians, and strategies for establishing clear expectations and meaningful supervision structures. The course examines the supervisory alliance, including goals, tasks, relational factors, power differentials, role conflicts, and the balance between supportive and evaluative functions. Particular attention is given to culturally humble and responsive supervision, including the influence of identity, systemic factors, and assumptions about professionalism within supervisory relationships.

The course also addresses practical strategies for promoting supervisee competence and client safety through direct observation, progress monitoring, structured feedback, reflective practice, and management of supervisee anxiety. Participants will consider approaches to supervisory ruptures and repair, clinician wellness, telesupervision, and emerging directions in competency-based supervision.

Through research, applied examples, and opportunities for reflection, participants will develop strategies for providing supervision that is developmentally responsive, culturally humble, ethically grounded, and focused on observable clinical competence.

This course consists of 330 minutes of video lectures, for a total of 5.5 CE credits.

Presenter

Amy Marschall, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, educator, author, and founder of Resiliency Mental Health. Her professional work includes psychotherapy, psychological assessment, clinical supervision, consultation, and continuing education. She develops and presents professional trainings on topics including clinical supervision, ethics, telepsychology, assessment, and neurodiversity-affirming practice. Her approach to supervision emphasizes competency development, reflective practice, cultural humility, ethical decision-making, and collaborative supervisory relationships. She is an author, speaker, and advocate.
