Nobody needs you at 9am any more.

The leaving do was fine. The first three months were genuinely good — the jobs got done, you slept, you went somewhere. Then something quieter arrived. The list is finished, the diary is open, and Monday means nothing.

That stretch is real, it is common, and almost nobody is warned about it. It usually turns up between month six and month twelve, and because it is unexpected it gets read as a personal failure rather than as a stage.

This workbook is for exactly that stretch. It is not about coping with getting older, and it will not talk down to you. It is about building a second identity on purpose, the way the first one never had to be built.

LARGE PRINT — AND WE MEAN IT

Most printable workbooks are set at 10 or 11 point, because it lets the seller claim more per page. This one is measured, not asserted:

  • 16pt body type on every page — the minimum, not the headline size
  • 1.6 line spacing, so lines do not run together
  • 10mm writing lines, wide enough to actually write on
  • 14:1 text contrast — the WCAG AA accessibility standard asks for 4.5:1
  • No grey body text, no hairline rules, no decorative script anywhere

It runs to 50 pages for that reason. The type was never shrunk to hit a page count.

THE ROOTED METHOD

Six steps, in order, over about twelve weeks.

R — RECLAIM THE MORNING. One fixed anchor before ten, that happens whether or not you feel like it. Structure has to be built now. It is no longer delivered.

O — OWN WHAT YOU ACTUALLY MISS. Separate the work from the status, the structure and the company. Most people aim at the wrong one for a year.

O — OFFER SOMETHING. Contribution without employment. The difference between being busy and being needed is whether anybody notices if you do not turn up.

T — TEND THE CONNECTIONS. The building used to supply friendship free. Now every contact is one you initiate. This is the invisible loss and the quickest win.

E — EXPECT THE DIP. Months six to twelve commonly flatten. Predicted, it is a stage. Unpredicted, it feels like proof that something is wrong with you.

D — DECIDE WHAT THIS DECADE IS FOR. Not a wish and not a bucket list. A written decision, with a date on it — and a real page to write it on.

WHAT IS INSIDE

  • What actually happens at six months — the part nobody warns you about
  • How this method was built — the sources, named, including where the evidence is thin
  • The Structure Gap — diagram one: the five things the job quietly supplied
  • The Dip — diagram two: the months 6–12 curve, named in advance
  • "What you actually miss" audit — separating the work, the status, the structure and the company. Most readers have never separated these
  • The ROOTED Method — the whole sequence on one page
  • Six steps across twelve pages — each step with its own worksheet
  • The ROOTED Worksheet — a worked example, then six blank copies
  • The ROOTED Pocket Card — cut out, for the wallet and the kitchen
  • The Week Shape — designing a week from nothing, which is harder than it sounds after forty years of one being handed to you
  • The Offer Directory — eight real categories of contribution, with a scored fit exercise
  • Connection inventory — who you actually still speak to now the building does not supply them, and one concrete re-contact action
  • Four script pages, written out in full — answering "so what do you do?" without apology; telling family you need something of your own; declining to become the default childcare or the free handyman, without the guilt; and space to write your own
  • The Decade Page — a written decision about what this next ten years is for
  • Eight-week tracker — one anchor kept, one contact made, energy, mood
  • An honest page about your health — what is worth tracking, and when to see a doctor rather than a workbook
  • Your 30/60/90-day path
  • When a month goes badly — what a bad month means, and what it does not
  • On getting more help — with real crisis and isolation helplines

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

HOW TO USE IT

  • Read pages 5 to 10 first — what happens at six months, and both diagrams. Do not fill anything in yet.
  • Do the audit on pages 9 and 10 honestly. The rest of the book runs on it.
  • Build one morning anchor and keep it for two weeks before adding anything else.
  • Work through O, O, T, E and D over the following two months.
  • Write the Decade Page last. It is the page the book exists for.

A NOTE ON GIVING IT

Plenty of people buy this for a parent who has just retired and is being quietly polite about how it is going. It prints and binds well at any copy shop if you would rather hand over something physical. Written for the retiree, not about them.

IMPORTANT

This workbook is self-help material. It draws on published work on retirement adjustment, role identity and social connection. It is not therapy, not medical advice, and not a diagnosis. It was not written by a clinician, it has not been clinically trialled, and it does not treat or cure anything.

See a doctor rather than a workbook if you have low mood most of the day for more than two weeks, if you have lost interest in things you chose freely, or if your sleep or appetite has changed and stayed changed.

If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line now. US and Canada: call or text 988. UK and Ireland: call 116 123 (Samaritans). Anywhere else: findahelpline.com.
