Bangladesh is home to a rich mosaic of ethnic and genetic heritage. While the majority today identify as ethnic Bengalis, the region has long been inhabited by diverse indigenous communities such as the Chakma, Tripura, and others, each with their own languages, customs, and genetic lineages. These groups are part of broader Austroasiatic, Tibeto-Burman, and Dravidian language families, reflecting deep prehistoric roots.

Long before Indo-Aryan influences arrived, the Bengal delta was inhabited by ancient farming and tribal communities—possibly connected to Austroasiatic rice cultivators who migrated from Southeast Asia thousands of years ago. Their genetic signature is still visible today in segments of the modern Bengali genome, especially in mitochondrial DNA.

Historically, Bengal was a crossroads of powerful empires and influential leaders. It was part of the Maurya Empire under Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE and later flourished during the Gupta Empire, which is often credited with consolidating Vedic culture in the region.

For this video, I have gathered the raw DNA of 5 Bengalis from the aadr + .HO dataset. I ran them through my trait predictor tool for DNA analysis and betacalc to look for risk scores for various common conditions.
