Finding the Names — Installment 74 (Roll 9, 1841–1843) — FREE
Finding the Names — Installment 74 continues Roll 9 of the New Orleans inward slave manifests (National Archives Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 9, NAID 173909088), images 241–360: 428 more entries (416 named, 12 unnamed) on 61 manifests, transcribed name by name from the original records. This stretch of the roll is filed out of order, and the dates as written run from December 1841 to March 1843.
Inside: Hope H. Slatter's two great shipments — the ship Tippecanoe's 67 out of Baltimore, nearly all under full surnames, and the ship Burlington's 77, families together. An inspector's footnote on another Burlington paper: "Henry, an Infant was left behind" — while Ruth, Delia and John sailed on, and the certificate went on counting four. The barque Forthian's 59 people against her certificate's "fifty eight" — Jane Cox's child rides unnumbered in her line. The schooner Charley's John and Henry, endorsed "not on board." A torn 1843 manifest, its names split by the rip. And Julia, aged 10, shipped entirely alone on the Harkaway — the manifest's only entry.

Every name is transcribed by hand from the National Archives' own scans. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed — nothing is guessed, and nobody is tidied away. Free — please share it, so these names can be found.
