Carmen Goes to the Vet: And Other Household Emergencies

Nothing tests a family like a snake who is not where she was left.

Aino leaves the lid resting instead of shut. Nappi the cat sees the whole thing and cannot tell anyone, because the pets speak only to each other and the humans have never heard a word of it. Four days later the flat has been taken apart, there is flour spread in the hall to catch tracks, and a grey Finnish man who was against this snake from the beginning is sleeping beside an empty tank with the lamp still on, in case she comes back and it is cold.

She is behind the radiator. She has found a better sun. It is longer.

That is the first emergency. This collection is all of them: the lump the size of a two euro coin, the night drive sixty kilometres in minus nine, the diagnosis nobody expected, the mites, the nine hour power cut and the neighbour's generator, three latches on one lid, and a laminated emergency card on the fridge with the cat listed under LOOKOUT.

Ten chapters of comic strips and six full Sunday pages about the particular panic of loving something that cannot tell you what is wrong.

70 full-colour pages. DRM-free PDF and EPUB included. Read on any device.
