In this Penguin Chick Art Project, students use felt markers and charcoal to create a fluffy, expressive penguin chick for the winter season. It fits a winter animals unit, Arctic studies or a seasonal art lesson.

Students use charcoal or oil pastel smudging and blending to add depth and softness to the feathers, and felt markers for color details and bold contrast. This mixed-media approach introduces different art materials and builds skills in drawing, shading and creating texture.

HOW TO USE IT

Look over the lesson plan and gather the materials in advance, then read through the visual and text step-by-steps. You may want to make a sample yourself so you are ready to help students. Photocopy the student handouts you need, such as the step-by-step drawing and rubric, and print the example artwork in color to show before the lesson as your hook.

Project the step-by-step pages for students to follow, show them under a document camera (best printed in color), or use them as your own guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a picture and a text description.

Materials: pencil, eraser, black felt, 30 step-by-step drawing handouts, charcoal, card stock or watercolor paper, washable felt markers, paintbrush and water.
