Eli Hartman did not know this as a boy, only that strangers sometimes appeared at the fence line—men in dark coats, men who asked about water and elevation and then left without explanation. His grandfather had always answered politely, offering coffee that was never accepted. “Some questions,” the old man used to say, “aren’t meant to be answered.”

The reason, Eli would later learn, lay beneath the fields.

The farm sat on a gentle rise in Lockport Township, St. Joseph County, a place where the land sloped just enough to drain cleanly while holding water deep below. An ancient aquifer ran steady and cold, fed by gravel beds laid down when glaciers still shaped Michigan’s bones. Early railroad surveyors had marked it. Canal planners had circled it in red pencil. During the war years, men from Lansing came quietly, measuring, listening, and leaving behind nothing but rumors.

They never stayed long.
