August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month ,a perfect reminder that our children’s vision is precious and worth protecting.
For many kids, good eyesight is a gateway to learning, playing, and exploring the world. And for children with visual impairments, protecting remaining vision (or preventing avoidable vision loss) can make a big difference in their daily lives.
In honor of this month, I’ve put together 12 simple, everyday tips you can follow at home, in school, or in play areas to help keep children’s eyes healthy.
12 Tips for Supporting Children’s Eye Health
- Regular Eye Check-Ups – Schedule comprehensive eye exams for your child every year or as recommended by an eye specialist.
- Protective Eyewear – Use kid-friendly sunglasses outdoors and safety goggles during sports or craft activities.
- Limit Screen Time – Encourage breaks from digital devices to prevent eye strain, especially during homework or play.
- Proper Lighting – Make sure children read or work in well-lit areas to reduce strain on their eyes.
- Healthy Diet – Include foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, plus omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for eye health.
- Teach the 20-20-20 Rule – Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to rest the eyes.
- Hand Hygiene – Teach kids to wash their hands before touching their eyes to prevent infections.
- Avoid Rubbing Eyes – Explain that rubbing can cause irritation or worsen existing eye conditions.
- Check Play Areas – Make sure toys and playground equipment are safe, age-appropriate, and free of sharp edges.
- Monitor for Changes – Watch for signs like squinting, frequent blinking, or moving closer to objects, and get them checked promptly.
- Wear Helmets for Outdoor Play – During biking, skating, or similar activities, helmets with face shields can protect eyes from injury.
- Be Sun Smart – Even on cloudy days, UV rays can harm the eyes. Sunglasses or hats with brims are simple protections.
Why This Matters
Healthy vision supports learning, social development, and independence. By taking small steps every day, we can prevent avoidable eye problems and give our children the best chance for strong, lasting vision.
