When creativity doesn't follow the plan — and that's okay.
I try to keep my creative life organised. I make lists of what I want to achieve each day, I laminate them and hang them next to my work space, I even tell myself I'll follow them. And for a little while, I do. But then something unexpected appears — a new idea, a spark of inspiration, a picture that demands to be born right now — and suddenly my tidy plan is out the window again.
I used to think this was a flaw. That I was being scattered or that I'd never "finish" anything properly. But I've come to realise that this is just how creativity works for me — wild, unpredictable, untameable and wonderfully alive.
Inspiration doesn't ask for permission. It doesn't arrive in neat order, or line up politely on my laminated list. It drifts in like starlight through the cracks — when I'm supposed to be doing something else, when the kettle's boiling or when I'm half asleep. And I've learned that if I ignore it, it fades. But if I follow it, something magical often happens.
For instance, yesterday I had my laminated list in my hand as I dutifully followed what I had planned for the day, when suddenly I was hit with an idea about creating my own set of Oracle cards. Before I could stop myself I was looking through my images for what resonated with me as a card and what that particular card would represent in the deck. So, now I have another thing to put on my laminated list. 🥰✨
Let me know in the comment section below if you think an Oracle Deck would be a good idea to pursue.
The mess can be frustrating, sure. It's easy to feel pulled in too many directions at once. But the truth is, the mess is where the magic happens. It's where ideas bump into each other, colours spill together, and something unexpected is born.
Maybe creativity isn't meant to be tidy. Maybe it's not meant to be managed or contained. Maybe it's just meant to be loved — in all it's messy, glorious, unpredictable beauty.
Because that's where the real magic lives.✨
Thank you for walking this messy, magical path with me.
Keep finding magic in the mess, Lisa 🎇
