The Mystical Mares of Epona - A new collection by blue avalon
"They came to me one by one, whispering in flowers, bells, and dreams..."
It started with a single image — a horse wrapped in color and crowned in wildflowers. But it wasn’t long before I realised she wouldn't be an only child. One by one they arrived in all their colourful glory waiting for their moment in the spotlight.
The Mystical Mares of Epona is a collection of eight fantasy horses, split into two mirrored herds: one cloaked in deep shadows, the other shining against pale light. Together, they carry symbols of freedom, feminine power, ancient ritual, and wild beauty.
🟣 The Black Bound Mares
These four mystical beings move through the night — their grey coats glowing against black, their manes dripping with vibrant hues of teal, coral, violet, and rose. Some wear antique jewellery, all wear garlands of colourful flowers. They feel like spirits of the in-between: not mournful, but deeply wise.
🐴 Seren – the starlit dreamer
🐴 Elowen – the woodland whisperer
🐴 Isolde – the romantic soul, adorned in antique gems
🐴Branwen – the regal mystic, draped in chains and memory
🟢 The Light-Woven Mares
In contrast, these four appear through soft white mist — pale grey forms adorned in bridles, bells, and ceremonial colour. Their beauty is softer, but no less powerful. Each wears antique adornments and splashes of paint like blessings or war paint. They feel like visions summoned in ritual.
🐴 Aishling – the sacred dream
🐴 Aoife – the joyful chaos, drenched in colour
🐴 Maeve – the serene queen
🐴 Grainne – the priestess in filigree
🌸 Symbolism and Storytelling
The name Epona comes from the ancient Celtic goddess of horses. She is the protector of horses, mainly mares and foals. She is also associated with fertility, abundance and the land.
These mares are not just artworks; they are vessels for that energy. Each one tells a story. Each one is part of something older, deeper, and still very much alive.
