: https://payhip.com/b/VZHJzReceiving a job offer is exciting, but the first number is not always the final number. A professional salary negotiation can improve your compensation without damaging the relationship you have built with the employer.
Start with appreciation
Respond with genuine enthusiasm before discussing compensation. Confirm that you are excited about the role and appreciate the offer. This keeps the conversation positive and makes it clear that your negotiation is about reaching the right agreement, not rejecting the opportunity.
Review the full offer
Look beyond base salary. Consider bonus opportunity, paid time off, schedule flexibility, remote work, insurance, retirement contributions, professional development, and the timing of the next compensation review. Decide which two or three items matter most before responding.
Build a business case
Your strongest position is the value you bring. Identify the experience, results, leadership, specialized skills, or market knowledge that directly support your request. Avoid making the conversation about personal bills or expenses.
Use a clear salary script
Try this:
Thank you for the offer. I am excited about the opportunity and confident I can make a strong contribution in this role. Based on the responsibilities, my experience, and the value I can bring, I was hoping we could discuss a base salary closer to [target amount]. Is there flexibility in the offer?
Then stop talking and allow the employer to respond.
Use a reasonable target
Research the market range for the title, location, and experience level. Ask for an amount you can support with evidence. A clear, credible request is stronger than an aggressive number with no explanation.
If salary is fixed
If the base salary cannot move, ask whether there is flexibility in a signing bonus, performance review timeline, paid time off, schedule, professional development funding, or another part of the package.
Get the final offer in writing
Once an agreement is reached, ask for the updated offer in writing. Review the complete package before accepting and confirm the start date, compensation, and any negotiated terms.
