How to Make Your First Budget in Under 30 Minutes (Even If Numbers Aren't Your Thing)

You've been meaning to "get serious" about your money for months.

Maybe years.

You've saved the Pinterest pins. You've watched the videos. You've told yourself this is the week more times than you can count — and somehow the spreadsheet still doesn't exist.

Here's the truth, love: budgeting doesn't require a finance degree, a color-coded envelope system, or a free Saturday. It requires thirty minutes and five simple steps. That's it.

Grab your coffee, pull up a notebook or your notes app, and let's build your first budget together — right now.

Step 1: Know Your Income (5 minutes)

This is your starting line, not a judgment.

Write down every dollar that comes in during a normal month — your paycheck, side hustle income, child support, whatever applies to you. If your income is variable, use your lowest typical month as your baseline. It's always easier to adjust up than to come up short.

Your only job here: one honest number at the bottom of the page.

Step 2: List Your Expenses (10 minutes)

This is the step most women skip — not because it's hard, but because it feels vulnerable. Seeing it all on paper can bring up a lot of feelings.

Take a breath. You are not your past spending. You're just gathering information.

Sort what you find into three quick buckets:

  • Fixed — rent, car payment, insurance, subscriptions
  • Variable — groceries, gas, dining out
  • Irregular — annual fees, gifts, car maintenance

You don't need every receipt from the last six months. Pull up your bank app, scroll through the last 30 days, and jot down what you see. Close enough is good enough for today.

Step 3: Set Your Priorities (5 minutes)

Before you assign a single dollar, decide what actually matters to you right now.

Ask yourself:

  • What's one debt I want gone this year?
  • What's one goal I'm saving toward?
  • What's one "want" I refuse to give up, because it makes life feel good?

This step is the difference between a budget that feels like a prison and one that feels like a plan you chose. Write your top three priorities at the top of your page — they'll guide every decision after this.

Step 4: Assign Your Money (5 minutes)

Now the fun part: give every dollar a job.

Using the framework from our "50/30/20" pin as a gentle guide —

  • 50% Needs — housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, insurance
  • 30% Wants — the joy spending, guilt-free
  • 20% Savings & Debt — your future self, funded

Your percentages don't have to be exact. This is a starting point, not a law. If your needs run at 65% right now, that's not failure — that's just where step one begins. Assign what you can, where it matters most to you.

Step 5: Review & Adjust (5 minutes)

A budget isn't something you build once and never touch again. It's a living plan.

Set a recurring reminder — weekly is ideal when you're new to this — to check in for five minutes. Did something come in higher than expected? Adjust. Did you find extra breathing room? Send it toward a goal. This one habit, more than any app or spreadsheet, is what separates the women who stick with budgeting from the women who give up in week two.

You Just Did It!

Look at that — thirty minutes, five steps, and you have a real, honest, yours first budget. Not perfect. Not final. Just started. And started is everything.

Here's what I want you to remember: awareness is the whole game. The moment you can see where your money goes, you get to decide where it goes next. That's not restriction — that's power.

Want to Make This Even Easier?

If today's exercise felt good but you're craving something a little more beautiful and a little less "blank notebook page" — that's exactly why I built the Month Money Blueprint, available now in the shop.

It takes everything you just did by hand and gives it a home: guided sections for your income, your priorities, your needs vs. wants, and a simple weekly check-in ritual — all wrapped in the same soft, feminine design you already love from this space. You don't need it to succeed. But if you're someone who does better with a pretty, done-for-you framework in front of you (no shame — most of us are), it will save you time every single month.
