Joshua Storytelling

The creative process of crafting Under The Waves was a journey in itself, mirroring the adventures of the two surf guys in the story. It started with a deep love for storytelling and an enduring fascination with the freedom and unpredictability of the ocean. I wanted to create a narrative that wasn’t just about surfing but about the spirit of exploration, connection, and self-discovery that comes with it.

Inspiration Strikes

The idea for Under The Waves began during my travels as a photographer on cruise ships. Observing the ocean every day gave me an appreciation for its vastness and mystery. I started jotting down thoughts about how surfers, who chase the perfect wave, could be symbolic of those chasing freedom, adventure, and life’s deeper meanings. These initial notes turned into the backbone of the story.

Developing the Characters

The two main characters came to life from a mix of personal experiences and the personalities of people I’ve met. One is adventurous and fearless, always seeking the next thrill, while the other is introspective, questioning the meaning of their journey. Their contrasting personalities were key to creating a story that balanced action-packed surfing sequences with reflective, emotional moments.

The Art and Storytelling

The world of Under The Waves wasn’t just about waves and beaches—it was about capturing the soul of the places they visited. I wanted the readers to feel like they were traveling alongside the characters, experiencing exotic locales and cultures. Researching global surf spots, coastal traditions, and the stories of local communities added layers of authenticity to the world I was building.

Overcoming Challenges

Like the characters in the comic, I faced my own trials along the way. Translating the fluid motion of surfing into still images was a creative puzzle. There were moments of self-doubt, as every artist experiences, but I reminded myself of the story’s essence: the pursuit of something bigger than yourself.
