I know it’s hard. Loving someone you don’t understand feels like trying to hug smoke—it slips through your fingers, no matter how tightly you try to hold on.
But please, if you’re a parent reading this, hear me with your heart:
Even if you don’t understand your children…
Even if you don’t agree with the choices they make…
Even if everything inside you wants to “fix” them, change them, or correct their path…
Support them anyway.
Because your words? They don’t just land. They linger.
Your words shape the voice they carry inside their heads. And when that voice sounds like rejection, comparison, or constant disappointment, it becomes a prison they live in every day.
I know, because I’m living it.
My mother doesn’t agree with my decisions—especially not the one to homeschool my kids. She says I’m just like my father, and she doesn’t mean that as a compliment. She throws her disbelief in my direction like sharp stones. And the worst part isn’t the disagreement. It’s the shame that comes wrapped inside her words.
But I’m not asking her to understand.
I’m just asking her to trust that maybe I see something she doesn’t. That maybe I’m building a life based on a dream only I can see right now.
And if she can’t support it?
Then I ask her, and every parent in her position: pray instead.
Speak blessings instead of curses. Or say nothing at all.
Because silence may feel like distance, but it’s far kinder than words that scar. And if you truly believe your child is lost, then stand in quiet faith that they’ll find their way—don’t shout them off the path they’re trying to walk.
Now, let me be clear—support doesn’t mean you condone everything.
It doesn’t mean you agree with destructive choices.
It doesn’t mean you’re saying yes to addiction, irresponsibility, or harm.
It doesn’t mean you abandon your values.
But support can mean this:
You see the person beneath the pain.
You see the child you once held, even when their choices break your heart.
You can pray. You can hope. You can speak life into the places where darkness has settled.
Because shame never healed anyone.
Condemnation never called someone home.
But love? Love leaves the light on.
So no, you don’t have to support the damage.
But please—support the healing that might come… if your child can still believe they’re worthy of it.
To every child who hears more criticism than care: I see you. I feel your ache. And I promise, you are not alone.
To every parent who struggles with their child’s choices: please know this—your support doesn’t require your approval. Just your presence. Just your grace. Just your decision to choose love over fear.
Because love—real, unconditional love—doesn’t need to understand to be present.
It just needs to stay.
